“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”
― Victor Hugo
Welcome to another super exciting episode of #Spotlight, if this is your first time encountering the series, don’t worry, I’ve got you! It’s never too late to start. Read the first episode here. I started this series because I got tired of waiting for the universe to bless me with my TV chat show(which will happen sometime in the future), in waiting, I decided to interview the amazing humans of the world and today’s guest is a gift to the Nigerian music industry. they just don’t know it yet.
Tomi Owo is… I don’t even know how to explain her sound to you. A friend sent me a link to one of her song, Versus. My life hasn’t been the same since then.
Here is a few of her singles that I just love, You NEED to listen to them, it will totally change your mind about the future of Nigerian music. I’m so proud.
Rora ft Femi Leye
Ile (A personal fave)
Her voice is so rich and so full that it transforms what ever environment you’re in, into something exotic. This is good music and when I hear good music, it makes me want to delve into the mind of the artist just to find out what makes them tick. I think to get to appreciate the music more when you understand the artist a bit more. Or is it just me?
Okay, I’m going to stop gushing now, let’s meet Tomi Owo…
You write all of your own music; where do you draw inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favourite part about the process?
I’m inspired by things I observe, my beliefs, and my experiences and those of others. My favourite part is getting to that point where the words come together to form a complete thought! It’s like finishing a painting, and seeing the image you created in your mind come to life.
What are typical mistakes people make when trying to pursue this career?
Know that it is important to be your authentic self. Every artiste has something unique to offer which should not be traded for a desire to be like somebody else.
It’s common for musicians to be out of work for long periods of time. How can you supplement this time without work? How can you transition out of this period as quickly as possible?
In my opinion, musicians are hardly ever out of work, unless they choose to be. A lot goes into making a song or project – conceptualizing, writing, creating the music, recording, roll-out, performing. These are all major stages in the process, and take a lot of time and effort. When a musician chooses not to work on new music, he or she can explore other interests, or provide a good balance by listening to music and works from around the world, and getting inspired.
Is there growth in this field? How do things generally look for new musicians entering the field?
Yes, there is. For anyone starting out a career in music, there will be light – just stay true to your uniqueness, work smart, persevere, and be consistent.
What is your best childhood memory?
All of my childhood. lol
What do you feel most proud of?
Making a move towards my dreams. Growing into the person I see myself becoming.
How would your friends describe you?
Reserved, kind, creative.
What is a skill you’d like to learn and why?
Pottery. I’d love to make pottery a form of art.
If you could witness any event of the past, present, or future, what would it be?
The swearing-in of Nigeria’s first female President.
What feels like love to you?
Having someone who listens to you and never gives up on you.
What is your strongest personal quality?
What would you change about your life if you knew you would never die?
I’d devote more time and energy to more things that matter.
What drives you to do better at something?
A need for results.
What do you want your tombstone to say?
Ha ha. She was kind and loved others.
You just got a free plane ticket to anywhere. You have to depart right now. Where are you going to go?
If you could be born into history as any famous person who would it be and why?
C.S. Lewis. His writing inspires me, and I would’ve loved to meet the man.
If you could clone any celebrity to be your new best friend, who would it be?
What is your current ringtone?
None. Vibrate only
What’s the difference between normal ketchup and fancy ketchup?
I had to Google this. “Fancy” is a USDA grade for normal tomato ketchup, and means that the ketchup needs to have a minimum of 33% tomato solids, amongst other requirements. LOL
I guess that’s why some ketchup types are thicker than others.
Thank you, Tomi!
