So What If You Don’t Know What Your Passion Is…
“What if you stopped following your passion and become passionate about whatever is in front of you instead?”
I know, I know. It sounds crazy right right? Because all our lives, we have been told to find our passion and just stick to it. That means, for us to be really successful in life we have to find that one thing that we are really good at.
How do you find what you’re really good at? I felt like it really involved you trying a bunch of different things, actively applying yourself and maybe you just might find what you’re really good at. I had done that for many years and I just kept feeling like I was missing something, I felt incomplete.
So many motivational speakers and coaches talk about finding your passion and making money out of it. Eventually, I started thinking maybe something was wrong with me. I mean, I know I’m passionate about different things, in totally unrelated fields, did that mean I was fucked?
Early this year, I had an Epiphany. I’m a really fast learner and I adapt so well into new environments a serial killer will be jealous. And when I get a new job, I’m always excited and just throw myself into that role, and learn as much as I can so I can be good at it. That had to count for something. But I didn’t know it had a name until I over heard my mum talking to a friend of hers about my unemployed status. “She is trained in Creative Media Practice, but if you put her in any role, it will be fine she is really passionate”
And I was like, Damn Mama! She really is the best PR agent. Shortly after that conversation, I watched this TED talk that completely blew my mind. You HAVE to watch it too.
What are you passionate about? You’re told these five words hold the key to a successful career and life purpose. What if it’s the wrong question altogether? This talk turns the ubiquitous “find your passion” message on its ear.
I don’t know all the answers yet, but the third quarter of the year is done and to be honest, I’m done “looking for my passion”, I already apply passion to everything I do and eventually, something good will come. I can feel it.
“Just don’t give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there’s love and inspiration, I don’t think you can go wrong.” —Ella Fitzgerald
Did you watch the talk? What do you think about this “passion” business?
